Chapter Twenty-Three

Donna

‘Do you want me to drop you at the station?’ I ask Joe as we approach Penzance.

‘No need. I’ve tasked Caden with the CCTV trawl and he’s going to find out if the arm had a safety pin. He’s going to put a trace out for Lucy, too.’ He pauses and looks across at me. ‘So, on balance, I think my time would be better spent with you at Penberth.’

‘Oh?’

Come on, Joe! Tell me how you feel. Tell me you love spending time at Penberth. Tell me it’s like a second home to you. Tell me—

‘It’s where the nerve centre is, after all,’ he says, adding, ‘And Lamorna’s a genius with mind maps. She’s probably solved it by now. Best not to let her down. Shall we grab some fish and chips on the way?’

We continue the journey with silent thoughts.

Joe Enys.

A year ago, you were dead to me. I was a modern, independent woman, not some schoolgirl pining over an old flame. Am I not a twenty-first century woman? Do I really need a man to sweep in and rescue me? Wasn’t the white knight thrown off his charger years ago, and by women who burnt their bras and could deadlift a small car?

The answer to that is yes. And now women like me, women who pushed the white knight off his horse and said ‘good riddance to bad news’ are now giving him a leg-up to get back on the thing. A middle ground; is that too much to ask for?

Oh, get over yourself, Donna. Joe Enys is not your white knight and never will be. He’s a copper with a job to do and that’s why he’s here. Although he did tell me I looked nice earlier. And I’m sure he was about to do or say something romantic before that bloody Tamara rocked up.

But back to the case.
